Muddy Logics: Shipbreaking

In this, the second of two papers, the author investigates the networks and protocols of the global ship breaking industry as they wash ashore on the Bangladesh coastline, where they produce a muddy, opportunistic frenzy of extractive recycling, outside recognizable boundaries of civic order. Drawing on ideas from the world of software design, the paper attempts to understand its logics and how design might engage it. The research is a component of ‘Folded Ocean’, an ongoing investigation into the organizational and spatial logics of the contemporary Indian Ocean world, a fluid, anti-geographical space where many transnational systems, practices and imaginaries intersect. It seeks to identify these and follow their itineraries as they fold into spatial products on land, figuring both sea and land based logics.
