Gadeokdo Island Masterplan (HydroPolis)
By Joyce Hsiang and Elijah Huge and Bimal Mendis
With the natural coastline of South Korea facing extinction from extensive land reclamation and rapid urbanization, the masterplan for the island of Gadeokdo proposes an alternative model for urbanization which preserves the island’s waterfront. Urban development is reconceived as a ring along a new, topographical datum that internalizes the coastline, creating a continuous, elevated canal city positioned mid-way between the mountains and the sea shore. This higher level of urbanism allows both the scenic and environmentally valuable coastline and mountain peaks to remain undeveloped and used for the future as a recreational and visual resource: a natural gateway to the international city of Busan.
